DESCRIPTION:
The increasing world’s ageing population, presents constantly elevated numbers of patients with dementia syndromes.
AIM The need to categorize dementia patients, with “Mini Mental State Examination” scores between 0 and 2, and furthermore the wider understanding of their condition, as well as the selection of behaviours on behalf of the escorts-caregivers and mainly of the medical and nursing staff towards them, is to be covered by the “Clinical Test Gatos”.
Material-Method Specialized scientists have produced a tool-questionnaire and studied its validity in 500 patients suffering from several dementia syndromes.
Results It had been proved that this tool shows statistically sufficient Convergent or criterion validity, Discriminate validity, internal consistency Reliability, Treatment effect validity (Responsiveness)-Sensitivity to change. The area under the curve (AUC) of GATOS total score was 0.877 (95%CI 0.85–0.91 P<0.0005) with cut-off point 12.5, sensitivity 85% and specificity, 75%. Patients with GATOS total score more than 12.5 have 85% probability to have MMSE score above 0, while patients with GATOS total score less than 12.5 have 75% probability to have zero MMSE score. Considering as gold standard 3 possible medical conditions (severe–moderate-mild) using the Gatos total score we can find 2 cut-off points, distinguishing the severe from the moderate condition [cut-off point 9.5, sensitivity 90%-specificity 98%, AUC=0.981 95%CI (0.96–1.00)] and the moderate from the mild condition [cut-off point 18.5, sensitivity 98% -specificity 96%, AUC=0.996 95%CI (0.99–1.00)].
